Our 2009 list for Border and Perpetual Flowering Carnations is now available.  The Perpetual Carnation section now features the varieties formally available from Maurice Woodfield together with some of my old favourites as well as new varieties.

My Border Carnation list features several additional varieties.

I recently visited the Hortifair Plant Show in Holland where several interesting new varieties were featured.  I hope to make these available in my next years list.

Over the past two years I have been trialling a peat free compost and have had had excellent results.  It is a soil based medium containing grit and green compost to which I have added my own nutriments.  With both carnations and crysanthemums is has proved its worth growing plants to show quality standards.

Tips for the month of October

Finalise first potting on of cuttings as and when ready.

Slow down on the watering of plants, grow as dry as you dare.

Clean off all glass inside and out to give plants as much light as possible.

Take the oppurtunity to clean and disinfect pots and supports ready for final potting on.

Keep an eye out for pests and diseases and treat as necessary.

My experiment with border carnations to try and determine if there is any differnce between plants raised from cuttings to those raised from layering continues. I am now coming into my third year of trial and I have yet to notice any discernible difference either in plants or flowers, although I would say I did lose some stock of plants raised from cuttings where the same variety raised from layers survived when grown outside.
