Tips For January
Plants should now be moving into growth, it is worth checking pots and to start potting on into final pots if the plants are ready. Carry on growing your plants as dry as you dare watering only when absolutely necessary. Keep an eye out for aphids and treat as necessary. Make sure your greenhouse glass is clean and remove and shading. Keep vents open except in the most extreme weather conditions.
Border carnations can now be potted into their final pots, I use 2 litre plastic pots with one plant per pot. Continue moving perpetuals and pinks from their cutting trays to 7 cm pots. Any pinks and perpetuals that are ready can be potted into the final pots, I use 1/1.5litre for the pinks and 2 litre for the perpetuals, again 1 plant per pot. Rembember you can take pink and perpetual cuttings all through the year but they will need heat to ensure rooting. If you have a thermostat on your propagator set it to 70deg.F (21deg.C). They will take longer to root in the autumn/winter months but will still make good plants providing you use good cutting material.
If you are keeping plants for a second year make sure you only keep the best. Cut out any dead or diseased foliage and treat plants with both systemic insecticide and fungicide. Clean off any debris from the top of the compost, lightly scratch the surface and add one teaspoon of blood, fish and bone fertiliser and water in. Clean up and wash any pots and supports you intend to use next year.
